Mastersoft SuDoku mini review
Well it is the new, old craze if that makes any sense that is sweeping the mobile nation - a newspaper, notepad or PDA is all you need. Sudoku is an ancient numbers game from the Far East that challenges the player to complete a puzzle of nine squares each containing nine squares populated by the numbers 1 to 9. Some numbers are already in place and you have to fill in the blank spaces - the twist being that each square of nine can only contain each number once as must each row and column of nine.
Mastersoft Mobile Solutions have developed a very thorough and complete incarnation of this popular game and a lot of thought has gone into the interface and operation. A number of difficulty levels are present ranging from Beginner through to Master. During each game an ever decreasing counter records your score and the quicker you can complete the puzzle the higher your final score will be. Selecting a harder level will take longer to complete however the rewards are in a higher counter to start with and therefore a possible higher final score. As you progress through the game a record of the number of games at each level is held as is your total accrued score and current Sudoku ranking.
As you work through the puzzle, the grid can be flipped or rotated through the transform option to help you spot possible solutions. The entry interface is very well implemented meaning you simply tap a square then tap on the number to place there. This intuitive system also allows you to change the entry colour at any time or to 'pencil' in possible values for each square in a minimised fashion. There is an option to check for any duplicates of entered numbers at the expense of reducing your running score and a handy hint option will show you where to place a number or highlight an error at the same penalty. If you accidentally misplace a number, a handy undo feature will allow you to roll back a few moves so you can backtrack as required. As well as the score counter, each game also has a timer which can be paused when needed and both these components can be hidden at any time should they prove distracting.
Many additional features are on offer like changing the numbers to a selection of different coloured icons for a visual change to the proceedings. You can also enter your own Sudoku puzzle from scratch into the game from a newspaper or other source and then play this game or have the Pocket PC present you with the solution! Further options include turning off the sound, a handy help menu and exiting the application will save your current game which you can resume on the next start.
Having been part of the beta program, I can testify that Mastersoft were very open to suggestions and user feedback and have crafted a very polished and complete version 1 of their title. I've yet to see a Sudoku game on the Pocket PC that is as extensive and well implemented as this. I highly recommend this title to anyone looking for the best Sudoku game on Pocket PC. This is sheer addiction for people who enjoy a challenging puzzle game that can be picked up and played at anytime.

Mastersoft SuDoku can be purchased for $14.95 from the Mastersoft Mobile Solutions website.
